I went to Davis today for a budding experiment at the NCGR and left home early to visit Joe's place. It makes me feel a bit guilty "wasting" so much space I have available at my place (I have a 47 acre farm but probably have an acre of ground around my home that is mostly unused). Joe's current count is 57 on this citrus, but it looks like he's locating a spot to fit just one more! Wink

Joe was generous with sharing information, time, and gifts of wine. Thanks again, Joe! Very Happy

Thanks Harvey!

The pic was taken yesterday, April 16, 2007 at about 7:30 am.

I was looking to squeeze in 3 more cultivars, so that it will be a 60-n-1 tree. I am thinking about bark grafting some of the navels at the mid canopy area, where there is a gap in the canopy and direct the bud growth over there.

Harvey got the rarest of my wines: Pomegranate Port and Pomegranate wine that only I have been enjoying til now.

So if anyone in this group happens to pass by northern california and around the vicinity, you could drop in as a citrus forum member and if the schedule is right... perhaps you might get a bottle of wine too. just email me. It is illegal to ship wines if you are not a commercial winery, so you have to pick them up and carry it yourself.

FYI - Joe is going to be my "partner" in pomegranate wine-making in a year or two. I'll supply the fruit and he'll supply the skills! I'm doing a formal trial of 10 cultivars and some should be able to be blended to make some nice wine.

Joe is so generous that he even grows cherries for the birds! Wink He has, perhaps, the tallest cherry trees I have ever witnessed!

Yes that's right! The cherry tree is multi-tiered. The lower and middle tiers belong to me, and the top tier belong to the birds. It is the unwritten contract in Davis. Should they pick my portion, the birds are going to regret it. So far, they have kept their part of the bargain.
