I have 5 kiwis 4-6 years old growen from seed, none of them flowered yet.
They look more redish than usual cultivars and leafs appears to be less 'leathery'. (photos taken yesterday)

2 of them grow in this corner, when nearby Poplar became strong enough it will be allowed to grow up there:

Do you know how old they should be to flower?

Flowered for the first time this year, one of them is female and other male. That makes 7 years from seed to fruit:

At the time of planting seedlings I made a guess, seedling which gave me 'male' impression (more hairy, more redish, leaves less heart like) turned to be male indeed. Or I was just lucky.

David,
more or less anything homegrown will taste better than supermarket equivalents.
Let me illustrate that with short story:
While I was looking at potted Meyer lemon my 6.5 y old daughter approached me yesterday, saying:
"Dad, your lemons taste much better than lemons from store."

Last winter we had eaten last homegrown kiwi fruit mid January. A month later I brought a small pack (0.5 kg or so) of kiwies from supermarket. That pack lasted till spring, my wife have eaten them only because she didn't want to toss them, other family members have decided to wait for next season...

Answering your other qst:
I start my harvest after a few of frosts, harvest ends before significantly cold wave approach us, for example:
end of harvest last year was Christmas day.
Monday this week was the end of this season harvest.

The best way for growing kiwi is using trellis or pergola. I'm using both plus:
as you can see on photo in 1st post fence is also used,
kiwi on the east side fence uses also nearby tree...

David, Gaia-project best wishes to your kiwies.

BTW: More info about my kiwis I gave in discussion here:
