I was scanning thru my mail today and just happend to look thru my copy of Progressive Farmer. There near the back, was Bob and his greenhouse! MY wife said she had looked at the magazine and she knew that guy looked familiar! I told her he ought to look familiar, We rode a bus all the way to Virginia Beach with him last year! LOL. Just wanted to congratulate you on having your hobby in a national publication like Progressive Farmer. Im not sure if the "PF" can be viewed on line. IF so, maybe some one can post a link. They also quoted Dr Arlie Powell with quite a bit of info in the article. Dr Powell has served as a judge at two of the Southeastern Citrus Expo's in the past.

Well It all comes down to who you know, because I think they got my name orginally from Stan McKenzie. So the trick to getting in national magazines is just to hang around Stan The Citrus Man. - Millet

Congratulations Millet and for sharing your knowledge with us. You play a big part in making this forum an interesting learning experience. Thanks also to Stan for posting the news and to Lazz for putting the picture up.

Nice article. I haven't read Progressive Farmer in years and years.

WHAT SIZE POT? Pot citrus trees in at least a 10-gallon container; as plants get bigger they will yield more if you step them up to 15- to 25-gallon size. A satsuma in a 25-gallon container (one-half a whiskey barrel) will produce up to a bushel a year. A whiskey barrel half is about 25 gallons. You can use a nursery liner and put it in a decorative pot to place indoors. If you buy a 3-gallon tree, start it directly in a 15- to 25-gallon container. It will fill the pot in three to four years.

That seems like a rather big jump to me.

Alan , I totally agree with you concerning planting a 3 gallon tree directly into a 15-25 gallon container. I certainly would not plant a 3-gallon tree into such a large container. I don't know where the publishers of the magazine got that information. Further, I also don't know where some of the other information printed in the article came from. I do know that I was not the only person that was interviewed concerning the growing citrus article. - Millet

I've been going by a 50% step myself. A three gallon tree would go into a five or seven gallon pot. Maybe that's too conservative, but so far it seems to work well enough.

Alan, because I only use Root Maker or Root Builder type of air root pruning containers, I alway transplant according to the 4 inch rule. The 4 inch rule coinsides best with nature's method of root development. This method produces the maximum possible number of new roots in container grown plants. You can read about it here- Millet

Congrats on the great article. It's nice to finally put a face to the name. Between Stan and Millet, we have renowned growers on this forum.
