Anyone care to comment on the following satsuma/clementines I am contemplating ordering from CCPP this January? Anyone better than others? I want to get only a few as out of state customers pay $50+ including shipping for 12 buds of each variety! I already have algerian clementine and like it. I have many satsumas already.

Monreal, Caffin, Sodea Fina, Oroval, Corsica #1, de Nules, Nour - both excellent at my yard and in Gene Lester's place in Watsonville with a coastal influence ( or generally lacking heat than inland California, such as Davis)

Most Satsumas such as Kuno Wase, Aoshima are not good in my yard. The problem is that they are not good keepers in my yard.

the rest I don't have fruits yet.

I think this question would be best directed to JoeReal since he is near my area. I'm in Sacramento and would like to try my hand at Satsumas. Since you're in Davis, would you have any idea where I could find a tree?

This is my first post here and I'm pretty excited about finding some new tips for my Grapefruit and Lemon trees!

dsorge,

Some years, satsumas are good, and some years, not so good. But the best ones that I can recommend to you are similar to satsumas because they are really mandarin hybrids. Satsumas are not as reliable when it comes to taste, but really some years they are superb, and other years only so-so.

The top of my list right now would be Yosemite Gold. You can buy them at Capital Nursery, and if they're not available, I would recommend other places such as Menlo Growers. Yosemite Gold has been a consistent performer in my yard. It keeps very well on the tree, starting to ripen from January, and they can stay well past May and the taste imroves.

I still have to know how the Gold Nugget mandarin will perform in Davis. But these ones perform quite well: Monreal, Caffin, Sodea Fina, Oroval, Corsica #1, Clemenules, Nour. I also have Tango mandarin.

The Algerian Clementine that you can buy from Home Depot or WalMart are unexpectedly great performers, but you will have to wait 3 to 5 years when the fruits really develop their nice taste.

With respect to grapefruits, most years are not good. This year though and last year when we have warmer than usual winters, The Rio Star and Star Ruby grapefruits are excellent. If you love sweet white grapefruits, Oro Blanco would be the choice. Chandler pummelo and other grapefruits don't taste too well. We don't have enough heat because of maritime influence from our Delta Breezes. I am evaluating Cocktail Grapefruit hybrid right now.

Practically all lemons are great growers and bear almost year round fruits here, even when shaded. If you want big tree, get Lisbon lemon, for smaller one, you get Meyer. Can't decide? You can graft them all together.

Joe

Thanks for the recommendation on the Yosemite Gold. I'll drop by Capital this weekend.

I've got a Meyer Lemon which has performed exceptionally and I think my grapefruit (the type escapes me) will finally give me decent fruit this coming season.

Thanks again and I look forward to learning more about citrus.

I recently purchased 2 Gold Nuggets and a Tango which I noticed you said you had JoeReal, what are your thoughts on those two trees?

Are there any nurserys that ship Nules Clementines? I keep trying to find one and the only nurserys I am finding that offer Nules have bad feedback on Garden Watchdog. Stan Mckenzie also is a no-go. Any thoughts?

Both the Gold Nugget and Tango are not as cold hardy as I thought they would be. They easily lose their leaves after the winter season. They are also a little bit sensitive to our mineralized (salty) water. Not as vigorous as I hoped they would be. The taste does not come close to those of my Clemenules which is often my best tasting, but doesn't keep well.

Thanks for the input JoeReal. Good to see you are back by the way! I NEED to get a Clemenule but am having a hard time coming across one. That's probably a good thing though as I really don't have the room but I'm sure I could get creative...
