I've been in Florida all of my life and I cannot recall ever having seen a cold snap where we are predicted to be at or below freezing five nights in a row. And this on top of more than two weeks of temperatures in December ranging from seventy to eighty. Lowest temp prediction as of tonight is 24 come Friday night though I expect there'll be some changes up or down.
Tonight's prediction is only for thirty two but seeing as how eight of my ten grove trees have new growth I went ahead and wrapped them. This time I put up a pvc pipe scaffolding to wrap the cloth around to keep it out of direct contact with the leaves as much as possible. Reckon we'll see how good that Agribon really is when I unwrap them all come Sunday.
As Sam Clemens once said long ago climate is what you expect, weather is what you get.

Latest NOAA forecast here has 21 for Friday Morning and 22 for Sat morning--yesterday they did not have a freezing temp predicted for Sat!
Prediction have been up and down --initially 24, then up to 28, now down to 21 for Friday morning. _________________ Skeet

RATS! Both of my peach trees are loaded with flowers. I am probably not going to get any peaches this year. |

Alan,
Who is predicting that low? Weather.com has it at 28F for Friday night. I think most of my plants will be ok if it only goes to 28, but 20 will be a real challenge.
We just got back from visiting my daughter-in-laws family in Colombia. Year round 80 or so daytime and 60 at night. They can grow just about anything. Never a worry about cold, but earthquakes are another matter. |

Yes, and also WeatherUnderground has it that low. Are you picking your fruit? I have so much on my trees I don't know where I would put it all right now. |

What little I have out there I am. My trees were zapped by a similar freeze last year. This time I have them all wrapped in frost cloth, but whether it's going to protect all that new growth our two week warm spell promoted I don't know.
Juice freezes well if you can't eat them all.

Lazz,
I hope you are right not to worry, freezing temps, clear skies, and extended cold sound like a bad combination to me. One thing about my location is that the prediction often turns out to be lower than the actual temperture. I normally end up a few degrees above the predicted low. That said, I have seen it go the other way.

That's what I'm hoping for. The prediction for my area's low last night was thirty two, but my porch thermometer said thirty eight this morning before dawn. The Weather Service has been hitting closer than that though for most of this winter. Maybe they'll revise the prediction upwards before then.

I would much rather have the weather/temp that we have here in the southeast. While you may be able to have a vegatable garden, citrus, bananas, and other tropical fruits in columbia you can't grow apples, peaches, pears, plums, apricots, blueberries, grapes, cherries, and all the numerous plants that DO REQUIRE a dormant period to get in there chill hours. No chill hours, no fruit. |
