Here is a very comprehensive online book about frost protection, courtesy of the FAO, from taxpayers money all over the world. This is something that you can read if you have slack time during Thanksgiving, and perhaps apply some techniques to your plants this winter season.

To read the book from the very beginning or from selected chapters, here is the interactive outline:

If you want to go directly ahead, I recommend this chapter first. This doesn't require technical details such as agrometeorology or physics. Discusses in very general terms, recommended reading for all. CHAPTER 2 - RECOMMENDED METHODS OF FROST PROTECTION:

And for those who would like to learn about the mechanics of frost formation, in terms of equations and physics, physiological damages, you can also study it here:
Physics: http://www.fao.org/docrep/008/y7223e/y7223e09.htm#bm9
Physiology: http://www.fao.org/docrep/008/y7223e/y7223e0a.htm#bm10

And of course the various passive methods in detail:
