I am planting a C35 Golden Nugget in a large hole (so far 3'x3'x3') and am planning on laying down 1" chicken wire on the bottom and sides. Although I haven't run into any gopher holes in this digging process, I live on top of a gopher hill and they seem to be everywhere else, at least on the sunny side of the hill, which this is.

There are two things I'm wondering about: 1. how thick will the roots get, and is the 1" chicken wire hole large enough to avoid choking some of the roots (is there a large tap root?). And 2. would it be best to put the chicken wire as deep as possible, or will there be few(large?) roots that get down to the 3 foot depth...do most of the roots spread out above that level.

I don't think the wire will bother the citrus roots. However, is not a gopher small enough to pass through a 1 inch hole? - Millet
