I have two Babaco papayas in a 10 gallon pot. A week or so ago I noticed the leaves were looking a little wilted and this morning I touched the tree and it felt unsteady down to below the soil. It has been hot in LA so I have been watering it daily until I see water running out of the bottom of the pot. They are planted in soil made for cactus and palm.

Is this root rot? Is there anything I can do to save the trees?

Papayas require excellent draining soil. Papayas eventually die almost exclusively from root rot. Papaya root rot is by FAR the number 1 cause of a papaya's death. Never, water a papaya with cold water, and never ever water a papaya when the soil is cold. I realize your weather has been hot, but over watering is sure death. - Millet (1,333-)[/u]

The water has always been lukewarm at the least. Is there anything I can do from here on out? My thinking right now is to stop watering for now and see if it recovers.

I have another pot with three Mexican papayas in it and they are about 3 feet tall. Seeing as how the weather is in the mid 80's to high 90's, how often should I water them?

Here's what I did to my Papayas. I know its a lost cause but I thought it wouldn't hurt to try.

UPDATE:
The tree on the right recovered and is actually producing a few fruit. Still in the same 1 gallon pot.
