I have two questions:

1) Does putting a budwood stick (Joe's Bark Graft) on one side of the tree affect the flavor of a budwood on another side of the tree? For example, grafting a lemon or lime bud stick on one main branch and grafting a mandarin or orange budwood stick on another main (different) branch, on the other side of the tree. All budwoods are on (share on) an overgrown rootstock with several main branches. Unknown rootstock, but has huge thorns. Used to be an orange tree, but the orange part of the tree was accidentally cut off. Now rootstock took over and has grown into a small multi--funky-branch tree.

2) When is usually a good time to unwrap a bark graft (removing the rubber band and grafting tape)?. I read that some people just ignore them and they will rot away. I asked because I wrap my bark graft pretty good. [Graft Tape - Rubber Band - Graft Tape] and they are on nice, clean, and tight. I just don't see how they can rot away or the budwood/branch can grow and break/stretch the graft tape and rubber band. BTW, I don't cover the buds though.

Thanks in advance.

1) it has to do with the scionwood and rootstock interaction, then sunlight exposure to affect flavor.

2) Bark Graft is one of the weakest buds during the first season, that is why it is reinforced with rubber band and allowed to stay for at least 3 months or more. Take it out after one year if it doesn't fall off.

T-buds are among the strongest and the wrappings can be taken out after a month. At times when the temperature range is ideal 80-90 deg F, the bud sprouted, and cambium heals quickly, you can safely take them out after 10 days.

Thanks Joe!

I guess what concern me is:

All thing being equal (sunlight, rootstock, etc), can a neighboring scionwood bark graft (any graft) affect the flavor of the bark graft next to it. For example, if you bark graft a lemon scionwood next to another bark graft of an orange scionwood (both scionwoods being on the same rootstock), can/will the lemon scionwood dilute the orange scionwood and vice versa? Will the future orange fruit taste a little lemony?

I hope I make sense....

I don't think a graft on another branch can affect any other graft on a different branch or rootstock sprout. It may be possible for an interstock to influence a graft or vice versa.

There is no influence of different scions on one rootstock....
So an orange or mandarine won't get more acid by an opposide grafted lime or lemon scion...
Because if that would happen, Sweet Oranges on Rangpur Stocks would be more acid that on sweet orange stocks, but this does not happen... and the grapefruit on my cocktail tree won't make the lemons or Rangpurs sweeter...

So do not thing about that, works well...
