Sarawak/Tahitian pummelo is probably my favorite pummelo variety. It's a top performer for me and is every bit of how it is usually described: lime green fleshed, sweet, melon-like, juicy and stands out with more of a unique flavor more than many of the other pummelos I grow. It has good vigor and and fruit set even when young. I often have to thin it out because it tries to hold too many fruit. Being in Texas you shouldn't have any trouble getting enough heat to ripen it fully but I hear that it flavors up pretty well even in the cooler parts of California.
thank you very much for your assessment! I will definitely try growing Sarawak since you rate it so high!! There are soooo many interesting things to grow ans sooooo little space...
We just picked and ate one this weekend, and it was wonderful! I think the Hirado Buntan wasn't quite at peak ripeness. I will definitely be planting the Sarawak in the ground this winter, and can't wait to eat more of them.
I made a video of my boys and I picking, weighing, and eating the fruit:

I have the Tahitian pummelo, too, and it does sweeten up very nicely here in S. California near the coast. It is a very interesting pummelo. Quite differently flavored than other pummelos. I like it quite a bit, very juicy and with a decidedly melon/lime taste. I like it as well as the Chandler, which is probably one of the best tasting pummelos out there. Another great pummelo hybrid, is the Valentine. It is a three-way cross between a Siamese Sweet pummelo x Dancy mandarin x Ruby blood orange.
thank you very much for sharing your opinion! I will most definitely plant Sarawak once the plant that was grafted in June is ready (although having no room for it ).
