For those with ponds, any tips o how to make one, whats best for them? With purchasing a home, be amazing to have something like that in the backyard with a little waterfall. I have access to amazing rocks living right on a huge river...
anyways would be amazing if soeone could give me a pointer. Are there ways to keep it warm in the winter so the fish can survive? (zone 5)
thanks |

I was Going to go with a 5 ft pond
50 ftx15ft of Pond liner still sitting
Digging the whole only 3 ft in with Wood on bottom and sides to hold it in then make the sides around the pond with Flower pots having banana or sitrus trees on the ends with smaller plants on the Sides,
Still havent done it though .
OH and for filteration make a holder for the barrols and the top would have pansys or some smaller plant with the top being removable so i can change filters every 6 months .
still trying to figure out hwat to do since i have a river under the ground here on the east side of the house where i wanted to put it .
and 100% sand still.Tammy _________________ If it breaths and loves life Im a Friend..

Me too Benny, it's been doing that to me lately - a few times. Lets me on other sites but kept saying "page cannot be displayed" last night for over 2 hours.
Gina, that really holds 100 gal's?? It just looks so small, even though it's 3 ft deep or more. What's the width? I will put some more pickeling salt in.. I put little in when you mentioned salt before. From my math (there is a way of figuring out how many gal's), mine is at least 500 gal. It's 8ft long & widest is 7ft (kidney shape) I'll take a better pic tomorrow.
You can only see one side & 8'length. I'll show the waterfal & fountain.
BTW... there are more baby fish even smaller than last batch I saw yest!!!! Now I have 3 batches of babies that hatched in a week.. 3 diff sizes for now. Gonna try counting them tomorrow. They sure are horny!
The hardest part was finding a place for all the dirt I dug out!!!
To find how to make one, just type 'making a pond' on search engine. _________________ Patty

try this way
This is my true story.
While living in the desert I bought a house. I found that there was an unused pond at thebackyard so naturally I put water and water lilies in them to make it useful. Then I bought those cheapu 20 gold fishes at Wallmart at 9 cents each. I was happy because I thought I was the only one in the whole Yucca Valley who had a pond. |

Mind you : living in the desert was closest to hell as you can get. No water for miles around, heavy dust storms constantly and the plants that would grow there were cactus only. |

Each morning, I played with my fish; I always tried to find my fish hiding in the water lilies and tried to catch them with small net. But one day I saw a bunch of very small black fishes swimming and hiding behind the roots of the water lilliesand two weeks later another smaller ones came out again.
I thought that was normal for the gold fish to have babies given a natural habitat. Now you guys are wondering and have many theories behind it. I never see any water bird in the area except owls and crows. There are millions of rabbits nd squirrels but foxes are many also. |

In the pond I even had a huge frog took residence in the pond but I wondered where it came from since there was no water but dust and tumble weeds around. You figure.
And in my teen years I saw a dead shrimp in one of the dish plates while saving rain water at the back porch in the Island. |

Good story Benny. I think your goldfish bred but where did that shrimp come from??????? And, where did that frog come from LOL -- in the DESERT? I had a frog in my pond about 4 yrs ago for only 2 days. Don't know where he came from ..wish he woulda stayed. I bought a few smails one yr thinking that they would help keep pond clean. They put out a mass of goopy slime so I threw them out! Fish place said that's how they breed. What is it about my pond??? LMAO _________________ Patty

No thanks Tammy, if they go in my pond they might want to breed & put out a mass of slime again. Everything that goes in there wants to breed. Even the lilies in there busted thru the pots they were in. Roots busted right thru all the sides. I give away half of them every yr to friends too.
I should sit in it for awhile & maybe I'll get lucky LOL Can't wait to see how many baby fish I can count tomorrow. _________________ Patty

Snail slime does a good job mucking up the filter too..
I just went and measured... the pond is 2' deep x 5' x 3 1/2'..
It is a rubber formed pond.. The box said it was 100 gal pond.. That is what I went by.. It looks lots smaller with all the rocks hanging over the edge.. doesn't help the HUGE rock in front makes it look smaller too.. That rock took 4 adults to move!! When I found it.. 3 oil field workers helped me load it in the back of my van.. then I had a tire blow out on the way home.. hubby came to help and a car load of guys stopped to help.. they loaded the rock in the other van in the middle rather than the back to evenly distribute the weight.. Hubby, oldest son and I shoved it out the side door of the van and it sat there at the curb for several months till I could round up enough ppl to move it 12 ft to where it is now.. This area is loaded with neat rocks.. I have been collecting most of the large rocks for 13 yrs since I moved here.. the smaller ones are imports from New Mexico and Colorado.. I also pick up a rock when I travel.. I have rocks from all over.. I've been collecting for as long as I can remember.. my dad was always telling me to take the rocks out of my pockets I already had enough rattling around in my head I didn't need them rattling in my pockets too.. So I learned to pick my two fav rocks.. or one per pocket!! Boy did I love painters pants!! LOL
Sorry to rattle off in left field, off topic..

Wow, nice rocks. In here, it is illegal to take rocks from anywhere except when you buy them from the stores. CalTrans owns all the rocks within a stone's throw from the roadside, except if the rock is in your private property. It is also illegal to take rocks from any park or government owned lands. Our DA's are inhumane and have no heart whatsoever and will persecute you just to advance their careers. |

I think the shrimp came from heaven and do you know that there are lichens or moss thriving and living in the water temperature at boiling point in underwater volcano in Hawaii? So there might be a desert frog. There is a desert turtle. Or white lizard. Or fishes at the deepest ocean where no light shines eternal. |
