A friend of mine patch buds seedling pecan trees this way and gets over 90 percent to grow. The down side is that it takes from summer until the next spring for the bud to grow. I will try it this summer on some trees about the same size as in the video. Thanks for posting it. _________________ Hershell

That pretty much the only way most people graft Pecan trees. A special grafting knife is even made to do this type of grafting. - Millet |

Pecans seedlings are whip grafted starting in January until we are finished about March 15 th. I graft part time for Shiloh farms. This year they are only grafting a little over 100,000 trees. I can graft a bout 800 to 1000 trees a day with one person wrapping for me. Patch budding is done in the summer if you didn't get all of them done before the bark starts to slip. It is easy but slow in comparison. Lamar can only patch bud about 100 trees a day and he is an extremely fast whip grafter. On another note I would love to post picks from my iPhone to here but can't does anyone have any tips. Or can I send them to someone that can. _________________ Hershell

The patch budding knives blades are 1 1/8 inch apart. the can easily be made from razor blades. I have an old folding patch budding knife that was recently gave to me. The only one like it that i have seen. |
