Two years ago we removed our citrus trees because we were adding on to our house and had to do major grading to our backyard. I've noticed new growth coming from where the trees used to be. I would love for the trees to grow back. Is it possible for them to grow back and bear fruit again? Or are these just shooters from the old root systems that will never develop into trees?

Most all citrus trees sold by nurseries are grafted trees, where a desirable variety is grafted or budded onto a usually undesirable (as far as being eatable) rootstock. Unless you know for sure that your tree's were seedlings, they are very probably grafted, and will re-grow only as the undesirable root stock. However, you can graft any variety of citrus onto the surviving rootstock and again have some wonderful trees. - Millet

Thanks, Millet. The trees have been there for over 20 years and may even have been around when the house was built in the late '30s (we live in an area that was once surrounded by citrus groves). So I'm not sure if they were seedlings or grafted trees from a nursery. Thanks again for the advice.

If the sprouts are a trifoliate it will be obvious-- they have 3 leaves like posion ivy. If the sprouts have single leaves there is a good chance that it is an edible variety.

That all depends... CA uses a lot of sour orange and rough lemon as rootstock.
